DIY Projects vs. Hiring a Pro

Home repair and remodel projects can cost big bucks. If you have a list of home projects you haven’t had time to tackle, we have some tips for DIY projects vs. hiring a pro. Dividing your list between things you can accomplish on your own vs. items you need to hire someone to do can help you get a faster start and save some money in the process.

Kitchen remodel projects

If you’re considering a kitchen update, some easy DIY projects include painting cabinets and installing a new backsplash. Painting the cabinets and the walls can help brighten a kitchen space and give it a fresh new look. Painting is one of the easiest and most affordable DIY home improvements that can make a big impact on a room. If you don’t have the funds to add a splashy new island to your kitchen, but would love the added workspace, a DIY kitchen island may be the answer. If you’re good with woodworking, you can find a piece of furniture to transform into an island or build it from scratch. It doesn’t have to be fancy to give you the added space you need. Installing extra shelves can turn an unused corner in any room into added storage space. Finally, swapping dated light fixtures for newer ones can also help achieve a more modern look and is a great DIY project.

Electrical & plumbing projects

When it comes to major electrical work, plumbing work, or plumbing repairs, we recommend you leave it to the experts. Unless you are experienced in electrical work, a DIY electrical project can be dangerous.  This goes for major plumbing repairs as well. Replacing water pipes or other important plumbing work should be completed by a licensed plumber. This includes work in your kitchen, bathroom, or anywhere in your home.

When you are moving appliances in a kitchen and it means moving electrical outlets, hire a professional. When moving plumbing, adding, or replacing pipes, the same goes. Invest in an expert. You’ll be glad you did.

Bathroom remodel projects.

Similar to a kitchen, dull and dated cabinets can give your bathroom an aged look. Painting or refinishing existing cabinets and replacing hardware can help update the look. Best of all, it’s the perfect DIY project. A pop of color or some painted stencils can draw the eye to the vanity in a small bathroom. A warmer color scheme, along with a new countertop can help transform and modernize a focal point. Adding a luxury showerhead can help your bathroom feel more like a spa. Small, inexpensive changes can make a big impact.  Another DIY project, bleaching and regrouting bathroom and bathtub tile can help freshen the look.

Window repair and replacements

We suggest you leave window installation to the pros. Although replacing dated windows may seem easy, they need to fit properly, or you will have many problems. It’s worth paying a pro to know they have been installed correctly.

Roof repairs

A roof repair is not to be tackled as a DIY project. A professional roofer has the expertise and tools needed to handle your repair safely.

Mold or asbestos removal

Mold and asbestos can be harmful if ingested. You should always hire a pro to be sure mold and asbestos in any area of your home is removed properly and safely.

Leave major remodels and repairs to the experts

If you don’t have the time, knowledge, or skill to comfortably complete a home remodel or repair, it’s always smart to hire a pro to get the job done. If your kitchen, bath, or living room remodel includes the demolition of a wall, call an expert. You may damage your home structurally. This goes for any work to your home’s foundation. Don’t take a chance on causing structural damage.

Another consideration when deciding if you can complete a DIY project is asking yourself if you have all of the tools you will need. While you may be able to borrow a few tools from friends, a licensed contractor, plumber, or electrician has all of the necessary tools to complete a job. While DIY projects can save you money, before you embark are on your next remodel, be sure it’s something you are capable of doing. Remember, some home projects are just not safe to be attempted by someone who is inexperienced.
